Menuas of Urartu

Menuas of Urartu

Menua was the fifth known king of Urartu, an ancient country in the Armenian Highland, from ca 810 to late 7th century BC

A younger son of the preceding Urartan king Ishpuinis, he was made a co-ruler by his father in the last years of his reign. Menua enlarged the kingdom greatly in numerous wars against the neighbouring countries and left a large number of inscriptions over a wide area. He established the outlines of the empire, and organized the centralized administrative structure, fortified a number of cities and founded fortresses, among them Menuakhinil at the Mount Ararat. The canal and irrigation system of the kingdom was heavily developed by him, one canal remaining in use to this day.

He was succeeded by his son, Argishtis I.
