text = General is the highest officer's rank in Sweden and Finland. Sweden:The king was the only holder of the rank until 1936 when a separate Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces was appointed and given this rank. The supereme commander reported to the king until 1975. After this, the supreme commander reports directly to the government and the role of the king become more symbolic. The monarch still holds this rank.

History and related ranks

Origin

The basic military unit of the middle ages was the company raised by a vassal lord on behalf of his lord usually the King. The lord was comissioned by the king as Kapten to lead the unit. As the number of companies grew, one captain was grantedoverall (general) authority and named captain general, which was shortened down to general.
