Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication is a specialist higher education sector college founded in 1962 and based in the United Kingdom, in Chislehurst, a suburban district in the London borough of Bromley. It specialises in design and broadcasting, and with a strong creative tradition in both, has a reputation as one of the country's best digital design colleges [Top Ten Design Degrees as voted in the UK by Computer Arts. See [http://x2.i-dat.org/~cs/dat/toptendegrees.pdf] (1.47MB)] . The College is also known for its fashion and clothing design courses.

History

Ravensbourne was purpose-built as a design and broadcasting College. It is set in 18 acres of private parkland, although it is currently planning to move to a state-of-the-art campus in Greenwich peninsula, South East London, in 2009 - 2010.

Ravensbourne is a long established provider of higher education. It has offered higher level courses in design since the 1960s. It was amongst the earliest of institutions to be approved by the then CNAA to convert the traditional Diploma programmes in Art and Design into honours degrees during the 1970s. Following the demise of the CNAA in 1992, the College entered into a validating partnership with the Royal College of Art, which agreed exceptionally to take this responsibility because of Ravensbourne’s strong reputation and longstanding links with the RCA. This validation ceased when the Royal College of Art withdrew from offering collaborative provision.

Ravensbourne College was recognised as an affiliate College of the University of Sussex in 1996 and re-recognised in 2002. All of its undergraduate and postgraduate provision is currently validated by the University of Sussex.

Curriculum and reputation

The College currently offers 15 undergraduate programmes and 2 postgraduate programmes with a combined FTE of around 1202. These are organised in two undergraduate Faculties (Faculty of Design and Faculty of Communication Media) and a postgraduate area of study. Additionally, the College offers a "Diploma in Foundation Studies" which enrols about 220 students.

Ravensbourne students have achieved success in many national competitions, such as the Royal Society of Arts Design Awards (RSA), British Design in Art Direction Awards (D&AD), New Designers Awards, Graduate Fashion Week Awards and PROMAX.

The College enjoys an excellent reputation in the subject areas in which it specialises and strong relationships with the creative industries to which it relates. The College’s students are over-represented in its success rate for national prizes, competitions and awards and its graduates are highly employable. National Centre of Excellence

Ravensbourne is a National Centre of Excellence for Broadcasting. It benefits from endowments from the UK’s independent television companies as it is a preferred supplier of education and training. The College has a £10m industry-standard broadcast facility, and is also one of the few institutions in Europe with advanced post-production facilities, donated and supported by Quantel. Ravensbourne is one of seventeen national Skillset Media Academies.

Rave on Air

Rave on Air is the yearly broadcasting event held at the College, a showcase for both current and future broadcast technologies. Large numbers of industry delegates attend on the day; it is the UK's largest Student Broadcasting event and is produced entirely by Ravensbourne students.
