History

The kibbutz was founded on 30 June 1937 as part of the tower and stockade settlement campaign by immigrants from Poland, Romania and Germany. They came from two groups: Kvutzat Shahal and Kvutzat Rodges. It is named after Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer, one of the fathers of the Zionist Movement and one of the leaders of Hovevei Zion.

The kibbutz was attacked on 28 February 1938 by a well organized and well armed Arab mob as part of the Arab revolt. The attack was repelled with many casualties on both sides, but they made a strong impression on the Arab population in Palestine, which as a result was reluctant to make direct attacks on Jewish settlements.

On February 20, 1948, before the neighboring Arab nations officially joined the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, a battalion of the Arab Liberation Army led by Muhammed Safa attacked Tirat Zvi. The Arabs were repelled with after suffering as many as 60 killed, while only one defender died. Jewish communities in Palestine saw this battle as a great victory, and morale increased significantly, while the battle had the opposite effect among the Arab population.

Economy

The kibbutz is well known for its meat processing factory (under the "Tiv" brand), which serves national and export customers.
