"A Christmas Carol" (1971) is a 25-minute animated cartoon adaptation of Charles Dickens' venerable novella which was originally shown on ABC television in the US.

Production

"A Christmas Carol" was animated and directed by Richard Williams, and starred Alastair Sim as the voice of Ebenezer Scrooge (a role Sim had previously performed in the 1951 live-action film "Scrooge"). Michael Hordern likewise reprised his 1951 performance as Marley's Ghost. Michael Redgrave narrated the story. Veteran animator Chuck Jones served as executive producer.

Awards

Originally produced as a television special, "A Christmas Carol" won an Academy Award (for best animated short subject) in 1973; it remains the only film adaptation of the story to date to be so honored. However, some industry insiders were unhappy that a short originally shown on TV was awarded the Academy Award, which led to the Academy changing its policy, disqualifying any shorts that were shown on television first. This adaptation has a distinctive look, created by multiple pans and zooms and excellent scene transitions. It also was largely inspired by the original illustrations of the story. Some people regard the movie as frightening due to the artist's emphasis on shadows.
