Awabakal people

The Awabakal (also Awabagal) are an Indigenous Australian people of coastal New South Wales.

Awaba is the word for Lake Macquarie – Awabakal therefore meaning people of Lake Macquarie. Europeans named a small town on the Awaba.

The Awabakal Newcastle Aboriginal Co-op was established in 1976 and is responsible for Aboriginal affairs in this region.

According to Norman Tindale, at the time of European contact they were bordered by the Worimi to the northeast, the Wonnarua to the northwest, and the Darkinjang to the west and south.
