South Dallas

South Dallas

South Dallas is an area in Dallas, Texas, (USA). It is usually either defined in one of two ways: As the area south of the Trinity River and south of Interstate 30, which consist mostly of Oak Cliff and Pleasant Grove, or to the area bounded by I-30 and Downtown Dallas to the north, the Trinity River to the west and south, and the Pleasant Grove area to the east. In recent years, revitalization programs have begun in an effort to make the area more attractive and to foster economic development. It is an overwhelming majority African American community, depending on your definition.

Education

South Dallas is within the Dallas Independent School District.

James Madison High School serves students in grades 9-12. Originally named Forest Avenue High School, the school's name and official colors, emblem, and mascot were changed in 1956 at the request of the parents' association and students after the district decided to re-designate the institution as a "Negro school" (the district had not yet agreed to begin desegregation as specified by the Brown v. Board of Education decision).

Lincoln High School serves students in grades 9-12.
