As a direct result of the hit and run death of Constable
Rick Sonnenberg , the "Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety", orHAWCS as it is better known, was created, and the Calgary Police Service became the first Agency in Canadian Law Enforcement History to incorporate the use of Air Support into its operations. In 2006, the Air watch was expanded, and a second Helicopter was purchased for the Air services unit.
The Calgary Police Service has also now begun to recruit officers from other international forces, especially the UK. This is because changes made, effective immediately, mean having Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status is not a necessary pre-requisite to apply to the Calgary Police Service. The full details are available on the recruiting website [http://www.calgarypolice.ca/recruiting/html/international_officers.htm]
