Lasell College is a private college in the Newton, Massachusetts village of Auburndale. The college is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.

History

The college was founded in 1851 as the Auburndale Female Seminary, a two-year college for women. During the college's first semester, founder Edward Lasell died of typhoid fever and the school was renamed Lasell Female Seminary. In 1932, the college changed its name to Lasell Junior College. The school began offering associate's degrees in 1943; and in 1989, the school finally took its current name when it adopted a charter to become a four-year institution.

The first baccalaureate class graduated from Lasell in 1992. The college has admitted male students since 1997, and it began offering a master's degree program in 2002.

A college radio station began operation in the fall of 2004. Programming is produced by students at the college.

Academics

Lasell College offers bachelor's degrees in professional disciplines such as Athletic Training, Fashion and Retail Merchandising, Communications, and Hospitality and Event Management. It also offers a graduate program in management studies.

The most prominent academic major at Lasell College is Fashion Design. Connected Learning, which involves students in offsite projects and assignments, is a major emphasis. Through the Connected Learning program, students at Lasell often work with residents at the Lasell Village, a retirement community, created to raise additional revenues. In spite of this, Lasell managed to keep its nonprofit status with the City of Newton. The Boston Globe headlined the controversy.
