World Bridge Championships

World Bridge Championships

The World Bridge Championships is an open competition organized every four years by the World Bridge Federation. The World Bridge Championships were initiated in 1962, under the name "World Pair Olympiad" which comprised the World Open Pairs Championship, the World Women Pairs Championship, as well as the World Mixed Teams Championship. The second event, held in 1966, saw a new competition added to the program: the World Mixed Pairs Championship, whilst in the fifth event in 1978 the World Knockout Teams for the Rosenblum Cup was added. A similar competition for women, the McConnell Cup, was included in 1994. The eight event in 1990 saw a senior competition added for the first time in World Senior Pairs Championship while World Senior Teams Championship debuted in 1994. The newest competition World IMP Pairs Championship was added in 1998.

Currently the World Bridge Championships comprise tournaments for pairs and teams in various categories (open, women, seniors, mixed) except mixed teams. All events in the World Bridge Championship are open to bridge players from any nationality without any quota restrictions being applied, and with all events being open to transnational entries.
