Adirondack County, New York

Adirondack County is a proposed new county in New York to be formed out of the northern part of what is now Essex County and the southern part of what is now Franklin County. It would tentatively include the Essex County towns of Jay, Keene, North Elba, Wilmington and St. Armand and the Franklin County towns of Tupper Lake (at one time called Altamont), Brighton, Franklin, Harrietstown and Santa Clara. Some residents of this region feel their communities are economically stronger than other nearby communities and would be better represented as a separate political entity within the state.

Land area and population

The above-named towns have a combined land area of 3,198.835 km² (1,235.077 sq mi) and a 2000 census combined population of 29,468 inhabitants. Its population density would be 9.21/km² (23.86/sq mi). The new county would take 27.68 percent of Essex County's land and 37.28 percent of its population. It would take 45.22 percent of Franklin County's land and 29.31 percent of its population.
