James of Venice

James of Venice [Giacomo da Venezia, Jacobus Veneticus Grecus, Jacobus Clericus de Venetia, Jacobus de Venetiis.] was a significant translator of Aristotle of the twelfth century. He has been called "the first systematic translator of Aristotle since Boethius". [ [http://www.myriobiblos.gr/texts/english/Walter_Berschin_34.html Walter Berschin - 4. Venice ] ] Not much is otherwise known about him. [ [http://www.fordham.edu/gsas/phil/klima/SMLM/PSMLM3/PSMLM3.pdf PDF] , p.5.]

He was active in particular in Constantinople [ [http://www.muslimphilosophy.com/ip/rep/B110.htm Translators ] ] ; he translated the "Posterior Analytics" from Greek to Latin in the period 1125-1150. [ [http://www2.bc.edu/~solere/docs/medieval_chronology.pdf PDF] ] [ [http://www.tinet.org/~apym/on-line/chronology/12.html] gives the date 1128 for several works.] This made available in Western Europe for the first time in half a millennium what was then called the New Logic, in other words the full "Organon".
