North American Young Generation in Nuclear

The North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NA-YGN) is an organization formed under the purpose of uniting young people in the fields of nuclear science and technology. Individuals can participate in the organization by becoming a continental member, joining a local chapter or joining a continental committee. In many cases, local chapters serve as informal new college graduate groups at companies like Westinghouse, AREVA, and GE, who are beefing up hiring to keep up with anticipated new plant orders.[1]

NA-YGN is active at various power plants and is also active in an international forum as seen by their calendar of activities.

The organization's newsletter is Go Nuke. Members are 35 and under (or, according to the NA-YGN bylaws, within the first 10 years of their career [2]), older professionals may be "honorary" members.[3] The organization was modeled after a European organization with a similar name, the European Nuclear Society Young Generation Network.[4] Some stated objectives are:

  • focus on the next generation
  • promote knowledge in a wide perspective of the nuclear industry
  • transfer the 'know-how' within generations
  • provide a platform for:
    • networking
    • professional development
    • knowledge transfer
    • recruitment and retention of young professionals in nuclear science and technology careers
    • public information
