George Mitchell School is a comprehensive School for children aged 11 to 16 in Leyton, London. It is attended by students who mainly live in the local area, with some from further afield.

Results

The results, shown by the league tables, indicate an improvement at key stages 3 and 4 and, in 2006, they were in to the 100 schools for this criteria in the league tables.

History

The school was previously known as the Farmer Road School, which was built during 1902 and opened on June 15th 1903 as a school for boys and girls of all ages. During the 1940’s, it became a secondary boys’ school, and remained so for 40 years. In 1986, it was reorganised again: it became co-educational, admitting both boys and girls from 11-16 years.

In 1957, the school was renamed in honour of George Mitchell, a student who had attended the school from 1923-1927. He won the Victoria Cross during the Second World War [ [http://www.victoriacross.org.uk/bbmitchg.htm VC placed in care of Regimental Museum] ] [ [http://www.thegordonhighlanders.co.uk/vc%20citations/private_george_allan_mitchell.htm VC Citaition] ] . Links are still maintained with Mitchell's regiment, the London Regiment, which is the amalgamation of multiple regiments including the Gordon Highlanders.Fact|date=August 2007

Another student of the school won the Victoria Cross – Jack Cornwell, known as the “boy hero” of the Battle of Jutland in 1916, awarded posthumously. He is the youngest ever recipient of the VC. chool expansion

The buildings have been expanded greatly during the last few years. A new gym and a new science block have been built. The school is currently undergoing extensive redecoration and refurbishment.

In January 1994, they opened a new Arts Centre to house our lessons of art, dance, drama and music. The school, which has a whole-school Arts policy, achieved the prestigious national Artsmark from the Arts Council in 2003.
