Elgin is a city in Comanche County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,210 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Lawton, Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Elgin is located at coor dms|34|46|51|N|98|17|34|W|city (34.780906, -98.292862)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,210 people, 457 households, and 338 families residing in the city. The population density was 473.9 people per square mile (183.2/km²). There were 492 housing units at an average density of 192.7/sq mi (74.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 81.98% White, 0.58% African American, 11.16% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 2.15% from other races, and 3.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.95% of the population.

There were 457 households out of which 40.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,324, and the median income for a family was $44,125. Males had a median income of $32,019 versus $22,614 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,264. About 7.4% of families and 9.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 12.6% of those age 65 or over.
