Toni Tennille was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, as part of a family of entertainers. Her father, Frank Tennille, was a "big band" singer with "Bob Crosby and the Bobcats", and her mother, Cathryn Tennille, was a local television pioneer, being the hostess of Montgomery’s first daytime TV talk show. Toni’s musical sisters, Jane, Louisa, and Melissa, all sang on her variety TV shows, as well as on the Captain & Tennille albums. Toni began her career studying classical piano at Auburn University and singing with the university's big band, the "Auburn Knights".

Toni sang backup vocals on Pink Floyd's "The Wall", and she also did backup singing for Sir Elton John's recordings: performing on at least three Elton John albums, including "Caribou", "Blue Moves", and "21 At 33", and most notably (and prominently) on the powerful rock song "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me".

Toni is 5 feet, 11 inches, (180 centimeters) tall. She married Kenneth Shearer in June 1962, and they were divorced in 1972. Toni married Daryl Dragon on 11 November 1975, and they remain married through the present time.

Toni Tennille could be considered to be the only female member of the Beach Boys. She sang with the Beach Boys during the 1970s when her husband, Daryl, was playing keyboards for that band.
