"The Boat That Rocked" is an upcoming ensemble period comedy film, scheduled for release in 2009. The film is set in 1966 and tells of the United Kingdom pirate radio movement, which illegally broadcast to audiences of up to 25 million from ships anchored off the coast of the UK. The film is written and directed by Richard Curtis and is being made by Working Title Films for Universal Pictures. "The Boat That Rocked" stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost and Kenneth Branagh. Principal photography started on March 4 2008 on location off the coast of England and ended in June 2008.

Premise

In the 1960s, illegal radio stations broadcast rock and pop music to up to 25 million people in the UK from ships anchored in the North Sea. The film tells of one such group of DJs in 1966 who are at the forefront of the UK pirate radio movement, putting them at odds with a traditionalist British government which prefers to broadcast jazz.
