Char Davies (born 1954) is an artist who creates artworks using the technologies of immersive virtual reality.
Life and work
Davies was born in Toronto. Originally a painter, she transitioned to digital media in the late 1980s, becoming a founding director of the 3-D software company Softimage. New media historians Frank Popper and Oliver Grau point out that her immersive virtual reality environment Osmose (1995) is a landmark work in the history of new media art.
Davies has also published numerous essays on virtual space and in 2005 she completed a doctorate in new media philosophy at CAiiA / Planetary Collegium, University of Plymouth, UK.
Recent awards include an honorary doctorate of fine arts (University of Victoria, British Columbia).
Davies is based in rural Quebec and San Francisco.[1]
