Corporate responsibility

Media Prima has been continuously fulfilling its corporate responsibility towards the community over the years. The Corporate Responsibility (CR) activities that Media Prima has been doing constantly is the PINTAR project (Promoting Intelligence, Nurturing Talents, and Advocating Responsibility).[1] The three adopted schools of Media Prima Berhad are SMK Jelutong, SMK Hutchings and the newly-adopted SK Cherating.[2] PINTAR activities provided by Media Prima Berhad are such as motivational talks for PMR and SPM students, examination workshops, academic excellence award, family day, study visits to Sri Pentas and student leadership camps.

While both SMK Hutchings and SMK Jelutong are considered under-performing schools, with students coming from underprivileged backgrounds, SMK Jelutong's passing rate for the PMR examination increased by 20% since 2006. At the same time, SMK Hutchings' PMR results had shown an average increase of 18% for Bahasa Malaysia, History, Mathematics and Chinese Language in 2008. In 2006, SMK Jelutong was ranked among the bottom five schools in terms of overall reputation in Penang i.e. 104th out of 109 schools. Three years later in 2009, with Media Prima's aid and contributions they climbed 27 rungs to be 77th out of 109 schools in Penang.

Apart from PINTAR project, Media Prima Berhad also has strong concern about the environmental issue. About 100 Media Prima Berhad staff had volunteered to clean up two stretches of oil slicks at Teluk Ramunia, Johor in June 2010. A crude oil tanker collided with a cargo vessel had caused some 2,000 tonnes of crude oil spilled into the waters.

Media Prima Berhad's TV Networks also provide programmes as the likes of Bersamamu, Aduan Rakyat and Project Sunshine which serve to provide aid to those in need also Chinese dramas, English dramas also Chinese news. In 2009, according to the command of Prime Minister of Malaysia Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Media Prima television stations (TV3, NTV7, 8TV & TV9)broadcast Chinese like Chinese, Mandarin, and Hokkien, English and Malay programs like Hokkien Music, Asian Music and Anugerah Juara Lagu in Chinese. But in October 2011, TV9 has broke away from Chinese and English language television station from TV3, NTV7 and 8TV and broadcasting just Malay languages, cartoons and Nickelodeon programs.

Media Prima’s radio networks have also advocate causes led by Malaysian National Diabetes Institute (NADI), Badan Warisan, Paws Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), and All Women’s Action Society Malaysia (AWAM). The radio networks sponsored airtime for the respective non-profit organisation’s Public Service Announcements.

The New Straits Times' “Spell-It-Right” Challenge 2010 aims to promote English Language amongst young Malaysians and at the same time promoting newspaper as an significant educational tool.

Being the leader in the outdoor industry, Big Tree Outdoor is moving on to becoming an eco-friendly business with efforts such as recycling materials like vinyl and inkjet from its billboards to produce reusable shopping bags and mouse pads. Big Tree Outdoor has also opted energy efficient LED lights for its billboards and introduced digital display systems which could reduce the vinyl usage.
