Rodalies Barcelone lines operated by RENFE (distances not to scale)

Rodalies Barcelona (Catalan pronunciation: [ruðəˈɫi.əs βərsəˈɫonə], Spanish: Cercanías Barcelona) is the commuter rail service that serves Barcelona, and its metropolitan area as well as other parts of the province.

Rodalies Barcelona is made up of 13 lines, 6 of which are operated by the Spanish company RENFE and 7 by Generalitat-owned FGC. The whole network—and fare system—is further divided into six concentrical areas, with Estació de Sants as its centre. Rodalies trains are fare-integrated with the Barcelona Metro network and a few other means of transport in the city, sharing stations and also running mostly underground in Barcelona and its adjacent municipalities.

RENFE Lines

The names of the lines, unlike the other Rodalies lines, all start with R, given they use a naming convention based on the Catalan name of the service, even if they sometimes can be found with the Spanish C naming convention, even if not as often.

FGC lines

FGC is going to become the only company in charge of Rodalies, and nowadays operates two of the main Rodalies lines. Besides, FGC also built commuter train lines of its own, known as S- or suburban lines, which are discussed in their own article.

Delays and other incidents

Renfe has received much criticism in the past few years[when?] because of what has been called an irregular service, due to its frequent delays, outages and other incidents, further aggravated by the implementation of high-speed rail (see AVE) in Barcelona. The company introduced Devolución XPRESS, which eases ticket refund to passengers who had to cope with delays of over 15 minutes. Also, the Ministry of Public Works stated a larger budget would be offered in order to improve rail infrastructure in Barcelona.
